We did a couple of character meals on our last Walt Disney World trip. Tusker House is the one I keep bringing up to people.
This Tusker House character breakfast review is the honest version: the food I actually liked, the food I didn't, and why this ended up being my favorite character meal of the whole trip. We did it as the kickoff to our Animal Kingdom day, our whole group of ten: our son Johnny (two and a half), my brother Jake and his wife Caelan and their boys, my other brother G, and my dad and my step mom Cheri. So we had a full table of opinions and a lot of plates to compare.

Which characters show up at Tusker House?
Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Mickey Mouse, and Goofy all came out during our meal, each dressed for safari. Every one of them made it to our table, which matters when you have a toddler who has been waiting all morning to see Mickey.
Johnny is a Mickey kid through and through, and that moment when Mickey walked up in his safari gear was the highlight of his morning. The characters were not rushed with us, which I appreciated.
The best character moment of the meal was with Donald. Johnny wrapped him in a hug and would not let go, and Donald just held it. That is not an accident. Disney trains its characters never to be the first to end a hug, so they wait for the child to let go on their own. Watching Donald patiently hold that hug for as long as my son wanted, without ever pulling away, was the kind of thing that makes a character meal worth every penny. Yes, I think it is worth it, mostly for the calmer character experience and a couple of standout items on the buffet. It felt less hectic than the other big character breakfast we did, and that alone made it more enjoyable for our group.

The Bobotie surprised me. It is a South African spiced dish, curry-like, and I ate it over rice. That was the item I would not have ordered anywhere else, and it was one of the best things on the buffet.
The one I would skip is the chocolate chip muffin at a 5.9. It was not horrible, just nothing special, and with the cinnamon buns sitting right there, I would never grab it again.
The cinnamon buns are the reason I will remember this meal. A 9.2 is not a number I hand out. I went back for a second one, and I am not sorry about it.
What is the standout dish at Tusker House?
The cinnamon buns are the standout, full stop. Warm, soft, and better than anything I expected off a theme-park breakfast buffet.
The Bobotie is the close runner-up and the one you should try if you want to eat something outside the usual breakfast lineup. Those two items carried the meal for me.

For our group, Tusker House was the better experience, mainly because it felt calmer. Our Chef Mickey's breakfast was a blast, but it was loud and busy in a way that can wear a toddler down fast.
Tusker House had a more relaxed pace. The room was full, the characters still came around, and yet it never tipped into chaos. With a toddler at the table, that difference is huge.
The buffet variety at Tusker House also edged it out for me. Both are good. If I had to rebook one tomorrow, it would be Tusker House.
