Hollywood Studios was the trickiest park to plan with a toddler, because so much of it is thrill rides a two-year-old cannot ride, and it handed us the two scariest moments of the whole trip for our son. Johnny is two and a half, and Mickey is his favorite thing on earth. Doing Hollywood Studios with a toddler meant leaning into the character and show moments and steering around the things that would terrify him, and we did not get that balance perfect.
We took the boat over from the Walt Disney World Dolphin. We were with my wife Colleen, my brother Jake and his wife Caelan and their two boys, my other brother G, and my dad and my step mom Cheri, which mattered once we hit all the rides Johnny was too small for. This is the park with Star Wars, Toy Story, and the big coasters, which is great for the adults and the older kids in your group. For a two-year-old, the trick is knowing which handful of things are actually for him and treating the rest as adult turns you take while someone watches the little one. It also helps that children under 3 get in free, so at two and a half Johnny cost us nothing at the gate.
What Can a Toddler Actually Do at Hollywood Studios?
Hollywood Studios has the fewest toddler rides of any Disney World park, which is the whole challenge here. Only two rides have no height requirement at all, Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway and Toy Story Mania, and a third, Alien Swirling Saucers in Toy Story Land, opens up at 32 inches, which some older toddlers clear. Beyond those, the toddler day is really about shows and characters.
The stage shows are where a little one can just sit and watch. Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live! in the Animation Courtyard is aimed right at this age, and Beauty and the Beast Live on Stage, the Frozen Sing-Along Celebration, and Lightning McQueen's Racing Academy are all easy, seated, no-height-requirement wins. Add the character meets, and you have a full day for a two-year-old without ever hitting a height rule. We did not get to all of these, so do not feel like you have to force the thrill rides to fill the day.
What About the Disney Jr. Morning Show?
Missing Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live! was my biggest regret of the day. We actually had a Lightning Lane for it, but we got delayed at the hotel and could not make it in time, and it stung because it is one of the few things at Hollywood Studios aimed squarely at a Mickey-obsessed toddler.
We figured we would just catch a later show, and here is the mistake: we assumed there would be an evening show around 6:15. The last show of the day was actually much earlier, around 5:10, so by the time we went looking, it was gone. The show runs about eight times a day and wraps in the early evening, so check the exact showtimes in the My Disney Experience app and treat that Lightning Lane like the appointment it is. Missing it is why we made a point of catching a Mickey meet later in the day.
Should You Ride Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway With a Toddler?
Yes, but hold your toddler on your lap the whole time, and I wish a Cast Member had told us that before we boarded. Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway was our first Lightning Lane of the day, and it is genuinely fun, but it is jerkier than it looks.
The ride whips around more than I expected, so it became a two-person job: Colleen held his head and chin while I held his body, the entire time, to keep him from knocking his face on anything. He had a great time, and so did I, once I stopped worrying. If you are riding this with a small kid, keep them on a lap and put hands on them.
Where Can You Meet Characters at Hollywood Studios Without the Crowds?
There is a quieter character alley near the Runaway Railway area, and it was one of my favorite finds of the whole trip. We got Mrs. Incredible, Edna Mode, and Sulley from Monsters, Inc., plus Donald, Goofy, and Pluto, with almost no crowd.
Low-key character meets like that are gold with a toddler, because there is no long line testing his patience and no pressure. The characters had time to actually interact with him.
Mickey and Minnie Starring in Red Carpet Dreams
Because we missed the morning show, the Mickey meet-and-greet became a must, and Mickey & Minnie Starring in Red Carpet Dreams delivered. Mickey appears here as the Sorcerer's Apprentice from Fantasia, with Minnie in her red-carpet look. Mickey is Johnny's whole world, so this was the moment the day was really about.
Is Oga's Cantina Worth It With a Toddler?
Yes, Oga's Cantina surprised me, and I went in with low expectations. The ambiance in the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge cantina is fantastic, the food was actually decent, and it made for a fun lunch stop.
Then a Stormtrooper walked right up to our table, and Johnny was terrified. It is completely on-brand for the place, and it is a great detail if your kid is older, but a two-year-old does not know it is pretend. If your toddler scares easily, keep an eye on the theming that walks around, because it can come to you.
What Rides Do You Take Turns On at Hollywood Studios?
The rest of the big rides all have height requirements, so with a toddler, you take turns using rider switch. We handled them with a mix of swapping with Jake and having my dad and Cheri spend time with the little ones, so every adult who wanted a turn got one. Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance
Rise of the Resistance was excellent and one of the best-executed rides I have ever been on. It has a height requirement, so Johnny sat this one out with a grown-up while the rest of us rode on a rider switch.
Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run
Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run is a blast if you like the idea of actually flying the ship. I was a pilot, and Colleen was an engineer, and we had a great time. This one is also for the adults and older kids in your group.
Here is a fun one if you have a full crew of six. There is a secret Grogu Mode you can unlock, where the cockpit lights glow green before takeoff, by buckling in and hitting a specific button sequence before the Cast Member finishes checking seatbelts. We had the steps pulled up on a phone, but my brother G just asked the Cast Member to help, and they activated it for us. It is a very cool Easter egg and worth asking about.
Slinky Dog Dash, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster, and Tower of Terror
Slinky Dog Dash in Toy Story Land is a genuinely kid-friendly coaster, but it has a 38-inch height requirement, so the adults and the older cousins rode it while Johnny watched. Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets is the new Muppets version, a full retheme that replaced the Aerosmith one on the same track with a new Muppets pre-show, and it is a real coaster for the grown-ups. The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror was Colleen's first time on it, and it did not disappoint. Tower of Terror and Space Mountain over at Magic Kingdom were the only two rides Colleen asked for the whole trip, her two non-negotiables, so getting her on both felt like a mission accomplished. All three of these are adult turns you take with a rider switch when you have a toddler along.
What Is the Best Food at Hollywood Studios?
The food in Galaxy's Edge was the surprise win of the day, and the standout was the Ronto Wrap, a pork and pork-sausage wrap we grabbed at Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo. I did not expect a quick-service item to be that good, and it came with an unusual, lightly battered side I had not seen before.
We also got the Endorian Fried Chicken Tip-Yip there with the mac and cheese, and that was solid too. For quick-service park food, Galaxy's Edge overdelivered, and it is worth planning a meal there.
How Did the Nap Strategy Work?
We went back to the hotel mid-afternoon for a two-hour nap, and it saved the night. We were back in the park around 5:30, and Johnny was a different kid for having slept.
A midday reset at the hotel is the single best thing you can do on a long park day with a toddler. Trying to power through from open to close is how you end up with a meltdown at 7 p.m. The nap is not lost park time; it is what buys you the evening.
Should You See Fantasmic With a Toddler?
Only if you pay for the dining package or VIP seating, and I learned that the hard way. We walked up to the 9 p.m. Fantasmic without reserved seating, and the seats we got were rough.
On top of the bad seats, the show has villain scenes, and Johnny got scared during them. Between the late hour, the poor view, and the villains, it was the one thing I would do differently. If you want to see Fantasmic with a scared toddler, pony up for the dining or VIP seating so you have a real seat and can manage the moment, or reconsider whether it is worth the late night at all.
