Traveling Panama City with Babies: The Ultimate Family-Friendly Guide

Traveling Panama City with Babies: The Ultimate Family-Friendly Guide

by Grant Davis

During our two-week trip to Panama, we based ourselves primarily in the capital city. Panama City became our home away from home as we ventured out on excursions to the San Blas Islands and Santa Catalina.

Why We Fell for Casco Viejo

Casco Viejo is an incredibly charming neighborhood filled with character. We were constantly delighted by the abundance of quaint bars and restaurants. Its historic ambiance offers a refreshing contrast to the towering, empty skyscrapers downtown. For a full list of our top Casco Viejo spots, check out our detailed recommendations.

Best Places to Stay in Panama City with Babies

We stayed in two separate Airbnbs within Casco Viejo. Both were wonderful, but one truly stood out for its spacious layout, ideal for our family, and its prime location. We had to switch after a last-minute cancellation at our Santa Catalina hotel (more on that story here!), and though our initial Airbnb was booked upon return, the second option was equally lovely. Casco Viejo is a great area to call home while visiting with little ones.

Before and after our San Blas adventure, we treated ourselves to the Waldorf Astoria. Thanks to a Hilton connection, we scored a nice discount! The hotel had a slightly dated vibe, but we appreciated the pool and the chance to enjoy some five-star comfort.

Family-Friendly Activities in Panama City

Visit the Panama Canal

No trip to Panama City is complete without seeing the Panama Canal. We explored the Miraflores Locks, though witnessing a ship transit proved more challenging than expected. The posted schedules online can be a bit off. When we arrived, a ship was just leaving the locks, but it was still fascinating! Ships move through mostly in the morning, pause midday, then reverse directions in the afternoon. The museum was closed during our visit, but the canal itself is awe-inspiring.

After touring the locks, head to Mirador de las Américas for sweeping canal views and quirky dragon statues.

Fun Family Moment: Explaining the canal to our toddler, Marin, we found an Animaniacs song on YouTube about the canal. It quickly became our daily sing-along, and Marin adorably called it “Panama Corral”!

Shopping Excursions

Living far from major cities in Costa Rica, we loved immersing ourselves in the capital’s energy. Shopping at Multiplaza Mall was a highlight, especially checking out the Christmas tree and dining at Benihana.

Visit Crazy Park

A local friend with kids recommended Crazy Park, a fantastic mix of trampoline park, arcade, and obstacle course. Marin was thrilled, and we visited multiple times!

Playgrounds and Parks

Casco Viejo has a delightful ship-shaped playground near the water. We also enjoyed Parque Omar and scenic walks along the Cinta Costera boardwalk. Near the Waldorf Astoria, there’s a smaller park perfect for quick play stops.

Day Trip to Taboga Island

Another friend suggested a ferry ride to Taboga Island, just 30 minutes from the city. We relaxed on the beach and savored fresh seafood. Although our home beaches set a high standard, the trip was a pleasant change of pace. Better weather might have made it even more special!

Explore Gamboa Rainforest

Not far from the city, Gamboa offers a nature retreat with a tram ride through the rainforest canopy and views of the canal. While it felt a bit rundown compared to its heyday, it was a refreshing way to connect with nature.

Where to Eat in Panama City with Babies

The Fish Market

We adore fresh seafood, and the fish market did not disappoint! We visited twice. Marin couldn’t get enough of his favorite “whole fish with the eyeballs,” and we enjoyed ceviche. It was casual, affordable, and absolutely delicious, highly recommended.

Casco Viejo Dining Highlights

For an in-depth look at dining and drinking in Casco Viejo, see our detailed post. Don’t miss dinner at Fonda Lo Que Hay, craft beers at La Rana Dorada, and coffee at Unido.

If you want a bustling urban experience in Central America that’s also family-friendly, Panama City is a top choice!
